Not since 1993 has the Philadelphia Philles been to the World Series. Last night the Phillies made there way back to the fall classic. By taking the series from the Dodgers 3-1. The Phillies jumped on the Dodgers early by what else a homerun. Jimmy Rollins who has been with the team since 1996 and was last year’s National League MVP set it off with a 1st inning homerun. Rollins had this to say about last night’s win. ”After hearing about the ‘93 team over and over and over again, we finally have a chance to make our mark,” And with the great starting pitching of Cole Hamels the Phillies are the National League Champions. The Phillies as a team was playing with a heavy heart. Manager Charlie Manuel who lost his mother during the series had to be torn with leaving the team and being with his family, or stay with the Philadelphia Phillies. Manuel who had one time thought he would be fired now is taking the Phillies to the World Series. The city of Brothely only has two championships throughout the history of there city. The 1980 Phillies and the 1983 76ers. Can Charile Manuel and the Phillies give the city there third? Will see

The Philadelphia Phillies have depend on the homerun ball the whole 2008 season. Therefore when they cameback to beat the Dodgers last night in L.A. The reason why was due to the long ball. The Phillies who were down 5-3 coming into the top of the 8th. Put the long ball to work. Lead by Shane Victorino who hit a 2 run blast to tie the game up at 5-5. And just like all playoff series someone you will never thought contribute turns out to produce the biggest hit of the series. In steps in one Matt Stairs. Stairs into his 15th season never hit a homerun more bigger than the one he hit in the 8th inning. A 2 run blast to the right field seats. Matt Stairs was not a lost for words on what he was trying to do in the 8th inning ”My whole career, even back in the early days, my approach was try to hit the ball out of the ballpark,” he said. “And it’s something I enjoyed doing. In batting practice, I try to hit every ball out of the ballpark. I’m not going to lie, it’s fun. I try to hit home runs and that’s it. I’m not going to hit a single and steal second base. So I think the biggest thing is to get up there, swing hard and elevate.” And with the hit the Phillies steal a win from the Dodgers. And now take a comanding 3-1 lead in the NCLS. Charlie Manuel the manger of the Phillies had this to say”This was the biggest game we’ve won so far,” Philadelphia manager But the next one is even bigger. That’s kind of how we look at it.”

The Phillies drew blood in game 1 of the NCLS. By winning 3-2. Lead by a solid performance on the mound by Cole Hamels who went 7 plus innings gave up 2 runs. The big hitters for the Phillies were Chase Utley who tied the game up at 2-2. And Pat Burrel hit the go ahead homerun to give the Phillies the lead. The Phillies from there never looked back. The Phillies did what they do best and that’s produce runs with the homerun. In 43% of the games that they score was due to the long ball. The Dodgers had this game under control but with the error by shortstop Rafel Furcal which had a runner on base. Chase Utley was able to take advatange and get the Phillies back in the game with a 2 run homerun. This was a must game for the Phillies and now has a chance to go up 2-0 in the series with a win this afternoon.

The National League Championship series kicks off tonight. And with two teams that haven’t been to a world series since the early 90’s, look for both teams espcially there fans to be fired up to win this NCLS and go to the world series. Here is your break down of the series at each position.
1B- James Loney of the Dodgers has been hot during the postseason with a grand slam against the Cubs. But he is going up against the best homerun hitter in the National League and the Ryan Howard. Edge goes to the Philadelphia.
2B-Chase Utley has played a steady second base this season and at the plate been very productive as well. Utley this season batted .292 with 33 homeruns and 104 RBI’S. As for the Dodgers Rafel Jeff Kent was supposed to be there but has been injured and Angel Berroa has played solid in his place but clearly the advantage goes to the Phillies. (more…)

CC Sabithia is a canidate for National League MVP of the season. But tonight he just didn’t have it. Sabithia just ran out of fumes and the Phillies took advantage of the lefty. All the fireworks took place in this game in the 2nd inning when the Center Fielder Shane Victorino hit a 3 run homerun to give the Phillies the lead 4-1. The Phillies went on to win the game 5-1. The Phillies with the win is leading the best out of 5 2-0. CC Sabithia who has been starting three days rest in his past three starts had this to say.”I don’t think starting on three days’ rest had anything to do with it, “I just didn’t make pitches when I needed to.” Brett Meyers the Phillies starting pitcher went 7 innings gave up 2 runs and was solid and was able to pick up the win. On Saturday night the Phillies look to close out the series in Milwaukee. The starting pitcher for the Phillies will be 45 year old Jamie Moyer. As for the Brewers Dave Bush who is the last line of defense for the Brewers to stay alive in the postseason.
