WHY DID I GET MARRIED?

Monday, October 22nd, 2007 |

The question speaks for itself. Yes, Tyler Perry’s movie has everbody asking Why Did I Get Married? His movie has been the top movie for the last couple of weeks with sales of $21.5million. Now most would consider that this is an African-American film but Tyler’s message goes across all races. The movie is about four couples who gives us insight to this age old question. Each couple answers this question in it’s own way. There is Tyler Perry & Sharon Leal (Dianne & Terry), both successful in their careers and yet Dianne’s job maybe the death of her marriage. Janet Jackson & Malik Yoba (Gavin and Patricia) characters are the sounding boards for all of the other couples. But as the movie unfolds they too have a secret that has caused their marriage to be stagnate. The love triangle of Mike (Richard T. Jones) Sheila (Jill Scott) and Trina (Denise Boutte’) can make any pot boil over. Mike is a low-down brother who cheats on his wife with their best friend. Sheila is Mike’s wife who only sees herself through Mike’s eyes. Miss. Trina, well let’s just say her bubbling brown suga’ only adds up to be 20%. Tasha Smith and Micheal Jai White play Marcus & Angela who break up to make up every chance they get.

Playing critic: Angela (Tasha Smith) and Sheila (Jill Scott) stole the show! Angela had a tongue on her that was sharper than Zorro’s sword. Sheila’s low self esteem has most women looking in the mirror. Janet’s role could have been easily played by someone else i.e., Elise Neal, or Terri J. Vaughn. Janet’s character, Patricia does not become real to me until she breaks down in her husband’s arms. Dianne resembles most women today - it’s all about the J.O.B . Each woman, Sheila, Dianne, Patrica, and Angela portray characteristics I see in myself. I am overjoyed to know how I have grown, and still growing.

Most could say that this is another male bashing movie for women; it is not. Tyler Perry portrays each male sensibly. Even with flaws of Mike & Marcus you find that you are rooting for them by the end of the movie. Tyler’s role could have been played by Mos Def, or Keith Robinson (Effie’s brother from C.C. White ~ Dreamgirls).

While enjoying this movie between the secrets revealed, we see ourselves. We all know someone that reflect these characters. It is teeth-pulling to see how each couple will end up or should I say begin again. After the movie, I found myself asking that same question. Why Did I Get Married? Honestly so many answers popped in and out of my head; too many to tell. However, I do know that the answers you have in the beginning of the marriage are not the same answers you have once being married for some years.

So continue to ask this question, and start this conversation we call love….
