Muscle, muscle and more muscle. That is what this region is all about. Memphis, Michigan State, Texas and Stanford. In what I think will be the game of the night Texas takes on Stanford in Houston of all places. In the nightcap Calipara and Izzo can’t ask for anything more.
Texas vs Stanford

The Lopez twins seem to be ready for primetime. After coach Trent Johnson was ejected against Marquette the twins took it upon themselves to get the Cardinal to the Sweet Sixteen. Texas is led by DJ Augustine and BJ Abrams a dynamic backcourt. As you can see it will take a good defensive effort from Stanford’s backcourt and Texas’ frontcourt. I say the Lopez twins make it hard for Abrams and Augustine.
Memphis vs Michigan St.
If you were like me you didn’t think much of the Spartans coming into the tournament. And if you are like me you forgot what a great coach Tom Izzo is. With senior Drew Neitzel being the emotional leader and with their overall physical play Michigan St. outlasted Pitt to get here. Now for the Tigers Derrick Rose and Chris Douglas-Roberts will be key not on the offensive end but more defensively. Rose will need to take Neitzel out of the game while CDR will need to prevent slashers to hole to keep Dorsey and Dozier out of foul trouble. Speaking of fouls Memphis please hit your free throws. Maybe too much to ask.
Memphis and Stanford face off for the right to go to the Final Four.

Stanford’s star senior Candice Wiggins played her last game at Maples Pavilion last night as Stanford beat UTEP 88-54. She had a fun time entertaining the crowd as she blew kisses and waved good-bye to her last home game. Wiggins was pretty much unstoppable as she matched a school-record with 44pts, the third most in NCAA tourney history. She is just behind Sheryl Swoopes, who scored 47 pts against OSU in 1993.

What a Saturday in College Basketball. Memphis survived not only the UAB Blazers but the fans as they escaped with a 79-78 win. Trailing 77-70 with just under to minutes to play Memphis closed the game on a 9-1 run keyed by Chris Douglas-Roberts. CDR as they call him completed a three point play with 6.5 seconds left as he spun in the lane for the lay-up along with the foul. Once again the free-throw line was almost the death of the Tigers as they shot an horrendous 12-25. That maybe their downfall. UConn used a 12-foot jumper in the lane by Craig Austrie with less than a second to play to lead the Huskies past South Florida 74-73 in overtime. The win gave the Huskies their ninth straight win. Another great Saturday in College football is complete. I mean what can you say about the sport that seems to just get better with every week. More so than any year I can remember no team is invincible. I mean this has been the greatest year of football that I can ever remember. On Saturday it was dubbed as “Gut Check Saturday” and for some they passed with flying colors. (more…)
