Best TEAM in the last 15

Thursday, February 28th, 2008 |

Everyone knows that I am a huge Florida Gator fan. With that out the way I am about to be objective. The 06-07 version of the Florida Gators to me are the best TEAM in College Basketball in the last 15 years. Matter of fact not just to me but for real they are the best TEAM. After winning the first basketball title of any kind in the state of Florida the “04’s” as they liked to be called (Corey Brewer, Taurean Green, Joakhim Noah, and Al Horford) all could have went pro. Especially Noah as he was the hottest commodity in the game. Some even said he would be the number 1 pick. Yet they all came back to school to create history. Now we have all seen what decisions like this have done to kids i.e the 90-91 UNLV team with Larry Johnson, Stacy Augmon, Anderson Hunt, and Greg Anthony. (more…)

Number 19 & 20

Monday, January 28th, 2008 |

Yes the “Baby Gators” have made it back into the Top 25 entering the polls again at no.19 in the AP and no.20 in the USA Today polls. With there win over previous no.14 ranked Vanderbilt, 86-64, the Gators go into their 5 day break leading the SEC East at 5-1. The next game will be the biggest to date against Tennessee in Knoxville. These young Gators consist of five freshmen, three sophomores, and one junior in their rotation. After back to back National Titles the consenous was that the Gators would not be as good this year. Some publications had the Gators picked to finish fifth in the East and hard pressed to make the postseason let alone the NCAA’s. Led by freshmen Nick Calathes, who leads the SEC with almost 6 assists per game, these guys compete night in and night out. That is the best complement I give them. As Vandy learned on Sunday if the Gators shoot the ball well to go along with their competiveness this team will be hard to beat. Considering what was lost from the team, Al Horford, Joakim Noah, Corey Brewer(all top ten picks), Taurean Green, Chris Richard(sixth man of the year), and Lee Humphrey(all-time leader in three point fieldgoals), the Gators are well ahead of schedule. This is not a one man band either. Sophomores Marresse Speights, Dan Werner bang down low. Junior Walter Hodge leads with his experience of being the only one left who played considerable minutes during the championships. Add in freshman Jai Lucas and what you have is a team that loves to play together and unselfish. Lookout for this team come March.

Baby Gators Grow Up

Wednesday, January 9th, 2008 |

Right before my eyes the 07-08 Florida Gator basketball team delivered one of the best performances in Gator history. A 90-83 victory in Tuscaloosa over Alabama. Now what makes this victory all the more sweeter was the fact that they were on the road. In a place that has been a house of horrors over the years. A fantastic performance from Jai Lucas, Nick Calathes, and Walter Hodge sparked the Gator comeback. Down by ten,47-37, Lucas drove the length of the court pulled up at the three point line and nailed a three before the buzzer slicing the lead to seven. That proved to be the biggest basket of the night as the Gators used that to spark the second half turnaround. Playing their first conference game without the “oh fours”, Al Horford, Joakhim Noah, Corey Brewer, and Taurean Green, This young squad may have put the rest of the conference on notice that this maybe a team to reckon with. Calathes paced the Gators with 21 points and 9 assist, Lucas added 19 points, Hodge had career high 17 and Dan Werner chipped in with 12 points and 7 rebounds. For Alabama Alonzo Gee had a game high 32 points, and Richard Hendrix added a double double 24 points and 16 boards.

They made History

Sunday, September 16th, 2007 |

This team became the first to repeat since the Duke led teams of Christian Lattner, Grant Hill, and Bobby Hurley.  They became the first starting five to return in tact and win the National Title.  In ‘06 they became the first team in the state of Florida to win a title.  Al Horford (3rd pick of the Hawks), Corey Brewer ( 7th pick of the Timberwolves), and Joakhim Noah ( 9th pick of the Bulls) became the first trio of teammates to be picked in the first 10 picks of the NBA Draft.  Five members of the team were selected including Taurean Green and Chris Richards in the second round ( Portland and Minnesota respectively).  On Saturday they were together again to receive their championship rings in front of a sell out crowd before the football team took on the Vols.  Truly to never be forgotten in Gator lore 05-07 seasons for the Gator basketball program not made Gator history they made basketball history.
