If you over heard someone in your office talking about the big brawl last night on TV, the first thing that would come to your mind is baseball. After that maybe a good WWE wrestling match, but if you guessed that you are dead wrong. This brawl took place in Los Angeles but it was not the Dodgers, but the Los Angeles Sparks fighting against the Detroit Shock. That’s right the WNBA, women’s basketball. What began as a reqular home game for the Sparks turned within 4.6 seconds left into a real Royal Rumble. The Sparks were up by four when Candace Parker (Sparks) tripped over Plenette Pierson. Parker threw a punch at Pierson and both teams came onto the floor. Hey, this fight was so deep that even assistant coach for the Shock Rick Mahorn was hit in the back by DeLisha Milton-Jones. Former MVP of the All-Star game Cheryl Ford was even knocked to the ground.

Candace Parker has done a lot this year. She won Back-to-Back NCAA Women’s National Championship and she was the No. 1 pick overall in this years WNBA draft. And one more thing she maybe doing is upstaging her current NBA big brother Anthony Parker who plays for the Toronto Raptors. In the playoffs Anthony is averaging 12 pts per game. When she makes her debut this spring, they will become the second sister/brother, WNBA/NBA players. The first was done by Mfon Udoka, who played 25 games for the Houston Comets back in 2003 while her brother Ime Udoka played four games on a 10-day contract with the Lakers. Udoka now plays for the Spurs. Candace will play her first WNBA game on May 17th at Phoenix and this game will be played on ABC. Anthony and the Toronto Raptors won big last night aganist the Orlando Magic, but my only question is who will win a Championship first……my money is on little sis.

With graduation coming at the end of the year Candace Parker has decided to forgo her last year of eligibility and enter the WNBA draft. Parker becomes the first female basketball athelete to leave school early. The fear of another knee injury may have factored into the equation. The Atlanta Dream are on the clock and Parker is there for the taking. It will be bitter sweet now that her fiance plays in Sacremento she will be in the “A” all by herself. Don’t worry Candace I will show you the town.LOL

C. Vivian Stringer said that if this were a Final Four game she would have lost her job. The play in question was the final play of a hard fought 59-58 loss to Tennessee for the Scarlet Knights of Rutgers. With the Lady Knights leading by one it seemed that every women on the Lady Vol team had a chance to win the game. Candace Parker had two chances but couldn’t get it to go. Then the strangest thing happened it seemed that the clock stopped at .2 seconds to go. Allowing for a foul to be called giving the Vols a chance to “steal” a win. Nicky Anosike was the recipient of the foul and calmly stepped to the line and sank both free throws. Here is where everything else is great for a women’s basketball. On one hand yes it was terrible for a great game like this to end this way. On the other hand today that is what people are talking about. During a slow night in the NBA and men’s college basketball this could not have gone better. Now I will say that it is a shame that UConn and Tennessee are not playing a regular season game this year. In the past the two fierce rivals would square off on national television sometimes twice a year. That rivalry needs to come back and we need to see more games like this one.
