Well, African American History month ends today, February 29th; officially and unofficially. As this month comes to a close, I am reminded & inspired of just how far we have come but oh such a long way to go. ”WE” stand on so many shoulders that have gone on before us and I am so grateful.
Here are some notable ”FIRST IN SPORTS”:
Ernie Davis was the first African American professional player to win the Heisman Trophy in 1961 (Syracuse University - running back)
Doug Williams was the first African American professional player to start and win a Super Bowl (Washington Redskins Super Bowl XXII , January 31,1988)
Coach Lovie Smith (Chicago Bears) & Tony Dungy (Indianapolis Colts) were the first African American coaches to lead their teams to the Super Bowl XLI February 4,2007
Charles Cooper (Boston Celtics), Earl Lloyd (Washington Capitols), and Nathaniel Clifton (New York Knickerbockers) were the first African Americans to play in the NBA in the 1950’s.
The first African American coach in the NBA was the one and only Bill Russell (Boston Celtics) in April 18, 1966
WNBA - Womens Professional Basketball started in June 1997 (New York, New York). Two great players help to polarize womens pro-baskeball: Lisa Leslie (Los Angeles Sparks) & Sheryl Swoopes (Houston Comets). Sheryl Swoopes was the first African American to have a shoe named after her “Air Swoopes”.
Dr. George F. Grant, a dentist and Harvard graduate patented the wooden golf tee in December 1899
Bill Lester was the first African American NASCAR driver to qualify for a starting field, in the Busch Series at Watkins Glen, New York
And history continues….so even on this leap year we again celebrate all that we are, all that we have become & will be…Happy African American History Month (our story)!

Last night, I was watching PBS ( Georgia’s Public Broadcasting Station ). One of America’s great African American scholars, Henry Louis Gates Jr. was bringing to life our Heritage. Our African American History is so complex and interwoven in America’s history that we thought it not robbery to celebrate this February - Black History Month with seeking our roots. Mr. Gates television special - African American Lives, uncovered several forgotten stories for instance that during the Civil War, many blacks joined the Union Colored Troops. After the Civil War, the Reconstruction years; former slaves were able to secure acres of land in South Carolina & Mississippi. Not only were free slaves able to work & farm their land, but African Americans were in government. Did you know that in January 1868 African American delegates were the majority at the South Carolina State Assembly? Or that Hiram Revels, representing Mississippi was elected the first African American in the U.S. Senate - 1870.
The airing of the show showcase the legendary Oprah Winfrey tracing her ancestry back to West Coast of Africa ( present day Liberia, Senegal, Guinea, Ivory Coast ) and Europe of course. What was so ironic that everything Oprah has brought forth in her life; the all girls school in Africa, love of land and her philanthropy had all been done by her great-great-great grandmother & father. I was blown away and I’m sure other viewers were as well. The essence of the this PBS special reveals to each person finding out what percentage of their DNA came from Africa vs. Europe, Asia or North America.
Now, I know that I am bringing a heavy topic to an online sports radio show, but haven’t you ever wondered where you come from?

Well, Sideline fans it’s been a minute…but here it goes..the other night I went to the movies to see the number #1 box office hit, JUMPER. The movie earned over $67 million during the weekend. JUMPER, starring Hayden Christensen as a teleporter, Samuel L. Jackson as the arch rival, and Rachel Bilson as the cute girlfriend. The plot centers around a young kid (David-Hayden) who gets bullied often in high school. After a being taunted by one of the school bulleys and saving his crush’s (Millie-Rachel) present. He realizes that he has unthinkable powers - teleporting through space & time. And that’s when his not so great life begins. This Sci-fi fantasy takes us all over the world and back in a blink of an eye, literally. Even I was on the edge of my seat, aweing at the places he was going; from Paris to the Pyramids. The director, Doug Liman definitely showcases the best of the world wonders. These effects draws you in with it’s Terminator / Matrix style action; especially when Samuel L. Jackson’s(Agent Roland) charactor jumps on the scene. He is showing no mercy. His great line in the movie is ”Only God should have this power”. And yet, with the fight scenes & breathe taking camera shots the movie is a let down. Too many unanswered questions, it fizzles out like flat Coca Cola. I wanted my money back, at least half of it ( I went to the late show ). I give this movie C-.
Sideline fans tell me what you think…

Someone must really like the reigning American Idol champion, Jordin Sparks. Although, her debut cd lost it’s luster with disappointing sales less than 130,000 copies, she continues to charm us with her live performances. She performed the natinal anthem on Super Bowl Sunday ( YEA Giants !!! ) and also performed this past weekend as a part of the NBA All-Star. Even the 39th NAACP Image Awards adorned her with the Outstanding New Artist award. To top all of that off she will be opening for the one and only Alicia Keys; As I Am tour starting on April 19 in Hampton, Virginia. To be an outstanding artist I thought you had to have great record sales.

(By the way, the award should have gone to Chrisette Michelle. Just a little hater-a-tion.) Sources told me she bought down the house with her live performance at the Shout restaurant. Thanks to her and artist alike R&B is making a come back.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO YOU…Aquarius
