Camp Talk AFC SOUTH

Written on July 30, 2008 – 7:05 am | by chanceblack |

In one of the toughest divisions in the NFL is the AFC South.  You have the COLTS, JAGUARS, TITANS, TEXANS. All 4 teams are tough and unpredictable.  You don’t know what you are getting yourself into playing these teams.  They show one thing and play another way come gameday.  At one point and time the Colts could not stop anyone, now their defense is pretty good.  How bout the Titans and the running game they have? but it was the arm of Vince Young that kept them in games.  One thing is for certain someone from the AFC SOUTH will be in the AFC CHAMPIONSHIP GAME.

Houston Texans Matt Shaub era began with a low thud, we saw some shades of good in the Texans and what they are trying to do.  Question in camp should be….why Steve Slaton at RB?  A.Green,C.Brown were not that effective last season.  The Texans had a shot at some good backs in the draft and passed for another O-Lineman that probably won’t play this year. At CB J.Reeves was torched in Dallas, don’t think he will make that much of an improvement. Mario Williams showed why he was picked over R.Bush, now teams know what to expect.  Prediction: 8-8 Playoffs: no

Indianapolis ColtsIf the injury bug can leave this team alone, they will beat the Patriots.  Last year’s game between the two showed us that the Colts no longer fear the Pats.  Half of the team was out and the Colts almost won.  It’s the Chargers that seem to have the Colt’s number now. Anyway the Colts need a good strength & endurance trainer. Must understand if you calculate all the games the Colts have played in the last 4 years it adds up to 4 1/2 seasons. That can take its toll. This will be Tony Dungy’s last year at the helm. Prediction: 12-4 Playoffs: SUPERBOWL BOUND

Jacksonville JaguarsThis is the scariest team in the NFL.  They are solid all the way around on this team. They have gotten rid of some dead weight in Matt Jones and injury plagued Bryon Leftwich. Opened the checkbook for underrated WRs Joey Porter & Troy Williamson. On defense they lost sack-master Marcus Stroud, but replaced him with another via the draft in Derek Harvey. Getting D.Florence at CB was also a good move. Question will be will D.Gerrard be able to play like he did last year? Taylor & Jones-Drew Combo is one of the best in the NFL and will take a lot of pressure off of Gerrard. Prediction: 10-6  playoffs: yes

Tennessee TitansYou can’t expect Vince Young to have a great passing game without WRs. Drafting C.Johnson and his 4.2 speed was ok, but what was really needed was WRs. J.Gage & J.McCareins will have to step up. Lucky for Young the Titans did grab Alge Crumpler from Atlanta. As we all saw in Atlanta, Crumpler will make plays but without some WR help teams will just key on him. Question? who can cover on this team? N.Harper is ok but not a shutdown corner. C.Finnegan will have his hands full at the other corner. The D-line is still one of the best, but stopping the pass will be key. Prediction: 9-7 Playoffs: yes, but just barely
