Jackie Robinson Day/ Do You Care ?

Written on April 15, 2008 – 10:53 am | by Harry Robinson |

Tonight at Shea Stadium the New York Mets will all wear the number 42.  Today April, 15th was the day the 1st black to play in the MLB.  Robinson batted for his career .311 and will go down as the most important figure in American Sports History.  Fast forward to 2008 the stats were released today and MLB players are now at a all time low at 8.2% 3% are black what does that mean that only 12 MLB pitchers are black.

If you go up to a black teenager and ask them I got tickets to the Phillies Vs. Braves game tonight they will look at you like you said something bad about there mother.  It’s a crying shame on how disconnect the young black male doesn’t want anything to do with baseball.  I remeber growing up I couldn’t wait to go to Yankee Stadium and get there early enough to see batting pratice.  I love watching Dwight Gooden and Darryl Strawberry even hall of fame player Dave Windfield etc.  Go out there and play with everything they got.  Now black kids these days don’t want a “DAMN” thing to do with baseball I mean you have the back to back MVP’S Ryan Howard and Jimmy Rollins on the same team and they’re both black but still not type of movement in the black community to support this product.  In matter of fact it’s going down every year.  Who’s to blame the lack of father’s in the black community no baseball fields not enough exposure given to the black MLB players. For and example like Nike,Reebok you see some here and there but heck Matt Lienart has more commercials than Ryan Howard or Jimmy Rollins so who’s is to blame why blacks don’t like baseball?  The explosion of basketball, football growing seeing commericals of Jordan,James.  Oh I forgot the favorite thing you always hear about why black young folks don’t like baseball “ITS TOO DAMN SLOW.” I hope this can turn around I wonder what kind of player would Allen Iverson would’ve been on this day we celebrate Jackie Robinson I hope people out there take a young kid in the urban community to a baseball game and let them know what a great game this is and tell them about the sacrafices that not only Robinson made but others as well Sachel Page , Josh Gibson etc.  I will be at those Braves Vs. Mets, Phillies etc this year come out there and support MLB baseball.
