Tennessee 66 Memphis 62
Yes your boy was wrong. What I didn’t expect was such a defensive struggle. What I had failed to mention was that both teams held their opponents under 70 points per game. What I didn’t expect was for both teams to do it to each other. In a hotley contested affair free throw shooting once again proved to be the difference as Memphis was 8-17 from the free throw line. Championship teams don’t shoot less than 60% from the line and win. It just can’t happen. What I didn’t like from Memphis was their players jawing with the referee’s all night. First off you are in college this is for the older guys in the NBA. Second just play ball. Derrick Rose proved that he is legit leading all scorers with 20 points and making plays when his team needed him to. It would be the athleticsm of the Vols that proved too much. Without star Chris Lofton at his best the Vols pounded the boards. Outrebounding the Tigers by 15 (50-35). The game plan coach Bruce Pearl had was to allow the Tigers to shoot from 3 point land. Early on the Tigers proved they could shoot as they opened the game 7 for 11. The Vols stuck to their guns as Memphis would hit only one more three the rest of the way. Now you have the women’s and men’s top ranked teams residing in the same gym. It was a classic affair. This game was so huge that you had stars such as Peyton Manning repping his orange, Penny Hardaway supporting his team, and Priscilla Presley all in attendance. Even Dick Vitale let the game tell the story. That’s a big game. How will this affect both teams from here on out? How will the Vols deal with the pressure of being number 1? Can Memphis ever get their free throw shooting together? We will see as the Big Dance nears.
