Romeo oh Romeo

Coach Romeo Crennel, Cleveland Browns

Yes I was one of those people who said that Romeo Crennel was headed to being fired when the Browns not only opened the season with a loss but had a quarterback change which led to that quarterback being traded. Fast forward 14 weeks later and you have the Browns one win away from the playoffs. Job well done. Just like his college counterpart Sly Croom at Mississippi State what these two men have done for the black coaching community is huge. Unlike their white coaching counterparts these men were not given the best of situations to succeed, i.e Norv Turner with the talent rich San Diego Chargers. For three years Crennel has been putting his touches on this Browns team with the hopes of success to come. That time is now. With Derek Anderson, Jamal Lewis, Braylon Edwards, Kellen Winslow and a young defense coming into it’s own the Browns are the scary team to play in the playoffs. Again I don’t want to put the cart before the horse bt with one more win the Browns are in. Now with that being said can we talk money. Like Croom, who makes less than a million dollars in the SEC where just about every coach makes over the million dollar mark, Crennel ranks in the bottom half of coaches salaries. It is time that these men reap the benefits of jobs well done. I cannot say enough about the what these two men have don for future head coaches that will come in the years ahead. Again I say job well done.

He has done a really terrific job and hopefully his success will help open the door for more coaching opportunites for black assistant coaches. Who wouldve thought a couple of years ago that Romeo would be having all this success while the supposed genius offensive coordinator of the Patriots has fallen on his face at Notre Dame (Charlie Weis)

Good point Scotty. Well said my man. I do think that is the key as well is how many assistant coaching jobs are bing held by blacks. You see plenty of times where a coach that is white can be fire but hired right away as a asst coach in no time. I look at Karl Dorrel at UCLA when and where will his next job come from. As far as NFL where is Ray Rhodes now?

I loved Ray Rhodes (NFL coach of the year in 1995 for Philly — my team). That man had juevos the size of bowling balls. He went for more 4th and 1s than anybody i have ever seen. He was a great motivator—lst i saw he was assistant for holmgren in seattle but had to take leave of absence for health reasons. I do agree with your point that most of the time Nfl owners will recycle the same white candidates when there are promising black candidates who havent gotten a shot. One last thing about ray– he coached the eagles during the Cowboy dynasty years and he always got us up to beat them at least once a year while they rolled over the rest of the league.
