Battle of Unbeatens
The UCLA women’s basketball team came up short in their lost to No. 3 Maryland 79-75 Sunday afternoon. The Terrapins needed a late 14-0 run to improve to 8-0 on the season, while UCLA fell to 3-1 on the year. Maryland used great shooting to jump to 35-28 lead at the break after enjoying as much as a 13-point cushion earlier in the half.
The Bruins opened the second half with a 10-3 run to get the score at 38-all with 16:19 remaining in the contest. The game was still tied with 13:55 to go at 46-each when the Bruins went on a 14-4 run to open up a 60-50 advantage with 10:04 to play. Help from junior guard Tierra Henderson gave UCLA the biggest lead in the game. She hit a pair of free throws with 6:47 left in the game.
Maryland was not about to lay down that easy, they fought back with a layup by senior post Laura Harper. The Terps’ then went on a 14 point stretch. UCLA then went to miss eight-straight, which brought the ball game to 73-72. Junior guard Kristi Toliver answered with a three-point shot to put the Terps back in front. With 23 seconds to play, the Terps played until Marah Strickland was fouled. She hit both free throws and the game ended on that note with Maryland pulling out the victory. This was a very close game and UCLA should have won. UCLA may need to look at their head coach, but the Terps are a very impressive group of young ladies.
