The Best Nicknames in Sports

Written on October 23, 2007 – 9:12 am | by bcourtney |

Question everybody; Do you feel that athletes  just don’t have nicknames like they used too?  I mean for the most part nickmanes are boring and unimaginative, a sea of T-Macs and A-Rods that seems to differ greatly from a past list that includes such classics as Cy, Schoolboy and Babe.  Even in the  world outside of sports you have your J-Los, Li-Lo (Lindsey Lohan) and Brit-Brit.  What happen to the creativity??  When a player did something outstanding and they were then given a name from that?

Still, I’m happy to say that nicknames are not dead. There are some bad ones out there today, of course, but over the last twenty years we have seen some great ones too, ones that truly capture that particular player’s impact on his chosen sport.  Here is a list of BC’s Top 20 nicknames in sports.

20. Hibachi (Gilbert Arenas)

19. Iron (Mike Tyson)

18. White Shoes (Billy Johnson)

17. Broadway (Joe Namath)

How did you forget the greatest basketball player to ever play the game Jordan before Jordan Kobe before Kobe Julius “the doctor” Erving. Dr.J without a doubt has to be at the top of the list.
