Let the Playoffs Begin
Boy what a way to start the playoffs then a extra inning rally for a win. That is exactly what happen last night in Colorado as the Rockies rallied from a 2-run deficit to win 9-8 in 13 innings. In the top of the 13th Jerry Hairston hit a two-run homer to lift the Padres to an 8-6 lead and then handed the game over to future Hall of Famer and all-time saves leader Trevor Hoffman. In a game on Saturday Hoffman had a chance to wrap up the Wild Card spot for the Padres when with two out in the botom of the ninth and the Padres leading 3-2 he gave up a rbi triple to of all people Tony Gwynn Jr, who’s dad had a HOF career with the Padres, then lost the game along with the game on Sunday to cause this one game playoff last night. The bottom of the 13th started with Kaz Matsui doubling to right center. With the crowd now starting to get re-energized potential Rookie of the Year Troy Tulowitzki doubled to left center to bring in Matzui to make the score 8-7 and Coors Field really rocking. Matt Holiday, MVP canidate, hit a shot off the scoreboard in right that Padre outfielder Brian Giles just missed for an rbi triple to tie the score at 8. After an intentional walk to Todd Helton defensive replacement Jamey Carroll hit a shallow fly ball to right where Giles grabbed and made a looping throw home that was just a hair late as Holiday came in with a head first slide. Catcher Michael Barrett did a great job of blocking the plate as Holiday came in with his slide. Replays showed that Holiday may not have touched the plate at all. After a hesitation home plate umpire Tim McClelland gave the safe sign to send the Rockies and Coors Field into euphoria. From here the Rockies winners of 14 of their last 15 take on the next hottest team in the NL the Philadelhia Phillies in what should sure be a knockdown drag out fight in the five game NLDS series.
