Weekend Review- College Football

Written on October 7, 2007 – 8:22 am | by kbarkley |

Another great Saturday in College football is complete. I mean what can you say about the sport that seems to just get better with every week.  More so than any year I can remember no team is invincible. I mean this has been the greatest year of football that I can ever remember.  On Saturday it was dubbed as “Gut Check Saturday” and for some they passed with flying colors.  Oklahoma rebounded from their stunning loss to Colorado to beat the Texas Longhorns in the “Red River Rivalry” 28-21 as freshman quarterback Sam Bradford continued his stellar play throwing for three touchdowns. Jim Harbaugh who was heavily criticized for his comments in the pre-season about the USC Trojans saying “They are the best team in the country and the best team ever”. Well he disproved his own evaluation by beating the men of Troy late Saturday night 24-23. Stanford became the first team to beat the Trojans at home since 2001 (35games) when Stanford did it coached by Tyrone Willingham. Stanford had to convert a fourth and 20 with less than a minute to play then a fourth and goal to finally get the victory. John David Booty cracked a bone in his throwing hand midway through the second quarter that may have led to him throwing four interceptions. In what was truly a classic the LSU Tigers proved to be too much for the Florida Gators winning 28-24 coming from behind to do it.  Trailing 24-14 in the fourth quarter head coach Les Miles became a riverboat gambler by going for four fourth down conversions and converting all four. With Florida leading 24-21 with just over a minute left the fourth and final conversion put the Tigers up 28-24 for the first time in the game as Jacob Hester plowed over the goalline for a touchdown. With the USC loss the Tigers are a definite number 1 this week.  Much maligned former Florida coach Ron Zook got his signature win as the Fighting Illini of Illinois beat #5 Wisconsin 31-26 in Champagne. Rising star running back Rashard Mendehall rushed for 160 yards and scored wo touchdowns. Zook continues to make Illinois relevant in the Big Ten. Missouri maybe a player in the Big 12 as they thumped the Cornhuskers of Nebraska 41-6. What has happened to the Cornhuskers? What was supposed to be a return to glory of sorts has now turned into a season of survival. Virginia Tech continues to show the ACC that they had a brief stumble at the beginning of the year and now seemed poised to reach the ACC title game. The Hokies went into the other “Death Valley” and tamed the Clemson Tigers 41-23.  Believe me the score was not that close. Tennessee kept their season alive by thrashing the Georgia Bulldogs 35-14 in Knoxville. That defeat sends the Bulldogs into a bevy of questions as they  prepare for very rough closing stretch to the season. With games against Kentucky, Florida, Auburn and Georgia Tech those questions need fast answers. What can you say about the year in College Football? I would like to say everything will return to normal but this is too much fun writing about all these teams that fall victim to the upset. Holla at ya next week……..
