The Best Conference in all the land

Written on October 25, 2007 – 1:03 pm | by kbarkley |

Without a doubt for the last decade the SEC has been considered the most competitive. Every Saturday if you don’t bring your “A” game anyone can be beaten. In that same time span the SouthEastern Conference has averaged over two million people in attendance each year. For that to happen every school even Vanderbilt, Mississppi, Mississippi State, Kentucky, all have to sellout. Now back to the battles on the field. The SEC has had a winning record in bowl games for the last four years along with a win percentage in non-conference games over .600. The conference has claimed two of the last five National titles (LSU 2002, Florida 2006). No other conference can say that. I’ll take you back to 1992 when the conference changed the landscape of college football as we know it. With the additions of Arkansas, and South Carolina the conference split into two divisions, East and West. That year the SEC ushered in the SEC Championship game the first of it’s kind. A huge success, it has been since copied by the Big 12, ACC, WAC, and the MAC. This season on the football field parity is at an all-time high. In the East, which has been dominated by three teams (Georgia, Florida, and Tennessee), now has Kentucky in the mix as well as South Carolina. Even Vanderbilt only a game back can still make its way to Atlanta. In the West Nick Saban has his Alabama Crimson Tide challenging who many considered the beast of the league, LSU, for the division crown with identical 4-1 records. Auburn sits a game back at 3-2 after a heartbreaking loss in Baton Rouge last week. That game and the Florida-LSU game are two of the classic games that have been played this season. The Heisman may come from this conference as well. With wonder boy Tim Tebow leading the Florida Gators and Andre Woodson in control of the Kentucky Wildcats. Also the favorite for the award in the pre-season, Darren McFadden, is still in the running with his all around talents. Now I have concentrated on football so far but if you look at basketball the conference is quickly becoming one of the best as well. With the two time reigning champs the Florida Gators and perennial power Kentucky Wildcats and up and comer Tennessee on the horizon as well. This without a doubt is the best conference in all the land.
