Les the Loser

Written on October 14, 2007 – 9:04 am | by kbarkley |

“I’m surprised by the way Kentucky moved the ball”. “I’m surprised by how ineffective we ran the ball”. ” As a coach I can coach better”. Those are the sentiments uttered by the much maligned Les Miles coach of the LSU Tigers. Now myself have probaly been the most critical of Miles over the last couple of years. Reasons for that you ask? Well I’ll tell you. When you have as he did last year the number 1 pick in the draft,Jamarcus Russell, at quarterback and two other receivers taken in the first round you should have at the very least won a conference title. Last year the Tigers lost to their two biggest rivals ( Auburn 7-3, and Florida 23-10). In those games the LSU committed over 20 penalties and turned the  ball over eight times, including five against Florida, three in scoring position including a fumble on the 1-yardline and a muffed kick return to open the second half that resulted in a safety. Since his arival from Oklahoma State Les has been an underachiever that has led to his team playing as underacheivers. This year is supposed to be the year. The defense is regarded as the best in the nation with at least two first round picks on the defensive line. Florida used the strategy of running right at the vaunted front line and they had success. Kentucky used the same strategy without their top two running backs in the lineup. This year is not over but it doesn’t look good. Next Saturday is the game against SEC west rival Auburn, who since some early season struggles have righted the ship and look to be formidable opponent for the west crown. What might to the most disturbing thing that has happened to LSU is that Michigan has turned their season around and the talks about Les Miles to Michigan have kinda cooled off. That can’t make the people in Baton Rouge very happy. They really won’t be happy if the these next two things happen. One Nick Saban’s Crimson Tide beats the Tigers in Tuscaloosa and the Tigers don’t win the SEC championship. If those two things happen Miles could be fired.
