I Got The 4-2 Husker Blues
I don’t have a cure for these 4-2 Husker Blues that me and many Husker fans are suffering from, so I think to myself “Why are we struggling?” As I think back to the USC game and how we played and the comments I made on the show that Monday, I say how could it really be the lack of talent that we have. The current coaching staff has done an okay job on the recruiting trail every year it has been in Lincoln. I’m not just talking about judging how well or bad Nebraska has done in recruiting under Callahan based on how many “stars” have been recurited. This is about how many players that were recruited under Callahan’s watch have shown their talents are of equal or superior quality to those in the Big 12 Conference. But lets not confuse talent with production. Nebraska’s on-field performance hasn’t always matched up with its amount of talent, and it certainly doesn’t this season. I mean Nebraska has the talent, judging by Senior Sam Keller’s productivity at Arizona State and Senior Maurice Purify’s athleticism, its obvious that these two would start at almost any other school in America.
Looking at some other recent recruits from this coaching staff are: sophomore Ndamukong Suh, junior Kevin Dixon, and seniors Carl Nicks and Steve Octavien, and ask yourself does Nebraska have players endowed with the skills necessary to stop the run? Even the defensive secondary is loaded with star potential. Cortney Grixby may not have prototypical size, but the man can seemingly jump over tall buildings in a single bound for goodness sake, and many have projected Zackary Bowman as a first-round NFL cornerback pick. And lets not forget two seasons ago when Oklahoma native Zac Taylor magicly appered on campus to save the day and he was recurited from this staff and also won Offensive Player of the Year. And then there is Brandon Jackson, who was lining up behind Brett Favre in the NFL two weeks ago before being sidelined with an injury.
My point to all of this is that Nebraska has at least the horses to run with the best of the Big 12, and they have done a great job bring life back into the Husker stands. Its just not clear who or what is to blame for the program’s recent lack of giddy up. But if you say the on-field talent isn’t the problem then maybe it is lack of team unity or the coaching staff has done a poor job developing them from the time they stepped on the campus.
Worse yet would be if Nebraska’s tradition of being able to pick up some high school kids out of nowhere and develop them into a star has faded away. Despite these potentially gloomy forecast, there is still a glimmer of light beyond the gray sky that the program and fans can hold onto. NU would likely at least claim a share of the Big 12 North Division championship with every team other than Missouri. Nebraska could even receive a favorable opponent like Texas A&M in a potential Big 12 Championship game.
However, all of that seems about as far away as Nebraska was from the end zone last Saturday.
