Cherokee 10 Starrs Mill 3
In game 1 of the Corky Kell Powerade Classic was truly a defensive struggle. For much of the game neither offense could muster up anything. That was pretty hard to take for the offense of Starrs Mill who came into the game with the reputation of being explosive. This was a revenge game as last year Starrs Mill crushed Cherokee 35-7. Throughout this Starrs Mill missed golden opportunity after opportunity. A fumble recovery of a Cherokee punt in the first quarter led to a missed fieldgoal. Yet another fumbled punt in Cherokee territory resulted in another missed fieldgoal. The game would be tied at 3 going into the fourth quarter when the only drive really of the game came for Cherokee. A 14-play 80 yard drive (all runs) that was led by running backs Matt Blaylock and John Valentine took almost six minutes off the clock late in the final period. The drive concluded with Valentine scoring from 4-yards out. A last ditch effort to tie the game ended when Matthew Sweat (qb Starrs Mill) was intercepted in the endzone by Cherokee’s Chrys Johnson preserving the 10-3 revenge victory.
