More Florida-Tennessee Memories

Written on September 13, 2007 – 9:38 am | by kbarkley |

The year was 1999 a year after Tee Martin led the Vols to a National Championship.  The previos meeting ended to me in controversy as a fieldgoal by Florida kicker Collins Cooper sailed wide left appeared to me at least to be good.  It was revenge time and after not going to Knoxville my dad and I were determined to get to the Swamp for this one.  What a great game it was.  A new star emerged that day for the Gators and his name Alex Brown.  This had to be the best defensive performance I had ever seen live and in person.  The first play of the game was a hand off by Martin to running back Jamal Lewis who gained five yards.  The key to the play was actually a penalty by Brown who was called for a personal foul as he hit Martin and knocked his helmet off.  That would set the tone for the game.  Brown would get acquanted with Martin to the tune of 7 tackles 5 sacks a interception, fumble forced, and two pass deflection.  It got to the point that after one sack Brown actually started counting his sacks on his hand ti was great.  Florida would forge to a 23-7 lead heading into the fourth quarter before the Vols began a furios comeback that saw them pull to within 23-21 with two minutes to play.  Driving late the Vols had a fourth and two.  Throughout the quarter the Vols had been gashing the Gators with runs right up the middle taking advantage of the size of their offensive line.  On this play though they decided to go with their patented toss sweep.  Thank you Phil Fulmer because the speed of the Gator defense made the play as Brown and defensive tackle Gerard Warren would stop Jamal Lewis in the backfield for a loss.  The Swamp went crazy and the Gators held on for the 23-21 win.  Another classic in this rivalry.  I love Tennessee week and you should also.  Check these two conference powerhouses go at it  Saturday at 3:30 on CBS.
