Taylor vs Pavlik

In what could truly could be the fight of the year Jermain Taylor takes on Kelly Pavlik on Saturday September 29th. Another great thing about this fight is that it is not on PPV. HBO will be carrying this fight live. How great is that. This is a matchup between two fighters that have very differnt styles. Kelly Pavlik is a fighter who loves to pressure you and deliver the big punch. Jermain Taylor is more of the classic style fighter who uses the jab moves and throws combo after combo to the body and the head. At first glance for me hands down I think Taylor will win this fight. After seeing Pavlik run through Edison Miranda in his last fight I don’t think it will be easy. Taylor has to keep Pavlik on the other end of his jab body punch early and often. Also Taylor has listen to his famous trainer Emanuel Steward for the entire fight not just when he wants to. That also will be a key in this fight. For Pavlik the stradegy is simple walk through Taylor like he did Edison. Land the big shots up the middle. Straight right hands and hooks will be how he could win this fight. My prediction is a 12 round slugfest. Majority decision for the winner and still middleweight champion of the world Jermain Taylor.

I think it’s highly likely that this turns out to be a late round knockout by Pavlik. Taylor is used to going the distance, but not at quite the same level of power and punch output. If you watched the Miranda/Pavlik fight, you’ll know that you saw more punches in 4 rounds than the whole Taylor/Spinks fight.
My prediction is that Taylor feels Pavlik’s power early, just as Miranda did. Taylor will know he’s in a real fight within 2 rounds, and then we’ll find out if Taylor still has the heart for a “real” fight. You know Pavlik is hungry.
Taylor has been surviving fights, Pavlik has been destroying opponents. I also believe that once Taylor feels Pavlik’s power… All of Emmanuel Stewards training and strategy goes out the window because Taylor will not listen. He’s going to be to busy dealing with the reality that he underestimated his opponent.
Most champions go down this way… they underestimate opponents because they buy their own hype. I would be willing to bet that Emmanuel Steward is giving him the real deal behind the scenes. Hope he listens.
