Spurs Sweep Cavs
This wasn’t their first NBA title, but it maybe the one that means the most. Champions for the fourth time in nine years, the San Antonio Spurs beat the Cleveland Cavaliers 83-82 in the Finals Thursday night making this team a dynasty. Tony Parker scored 24 points, Manu Ginoobil had 27 and the Spurs moved in among the NBA’s greatest franchises. With their fourth championship since 1999 - and third in five years - the Spurs joined the Los Angeles Lakers, Boston Celtics, and Chicago Bulls as the only team in NBA history to win four titles. And No. 5 might not be far away either with Parker, Ginobili and Tim Duncan leading the pack. As the final seconds ticked off on Cleveland’s finest season, the Spurs started to dance around the court in triumph. Unable to watch Lebron James walked off the court, “I didn’t want to turn around at all and look at it,” James said. The Spurs beat Denver, Phoenix and Utah to win the Western Conference title and then they swept pass the Cavs who were exposed during four games that were never close. Cleveland went on an 11-0 run to open the fourth quarter, taking its first lead in any second half of the series on James’ drive with 7:55 left. Cleveland went up 63-60 on Daniel Gibson’s drive, but that’s when the Spurs showed why they are champions. Parker, who avg 24.5 points on 57% shooting, became the first European-born player to be honored as MVP. He is set to marry Eva Longoria in July, and when Parker was handed the trophy, she wiped away tears. Spurs forward Robert Horry got another one, too, his seventh- the most by a non-Celtics player. The Spurs won in 1999, 2003, 2005, and 2007.
